Gym Worthy Hair Trends from the 2014 Runway

It's difficult to find a good balance between cute and functional at the gym, especially as one frantically gasps for air on the treadmill while sweat pours down the body. At this point functionality takes precedence over cuteness as there is a desperate urge to just get the hair away the face using whatever means necessary. Then reality sets in during a trip to the bathroom....a hot mess has occurred and cuteness isn't even in the game anymore. Sweaty, sticky hair is matte, smelly and the confident swagger that was carried into the gym quickly vanished.

While straight, blown out locks are not practical or even rational, there are options for cute AND practical hair in the gym. Not only cute, but actually.... *gasp*...... fashionable and on trend with today's runway styles. Now not every beehive/bouffant/hair-object-thing can be carried over the the gym....

(I'm looking at you, crazy blond hair-ball lady )

Despite hair wrapped in abnormal-size objects, there were a significant amount of achievable hair styles on the runway this season. Sleek low ponytails, exaggerated parts, and plaited braids took over the more traditional and complex hairstyles for sporty, yet low-maintenance looks.

Now that the crazy poofs are out of the picture, the focus can be shifted to more practical, obtainable looks:

Simple plaits were on the runway last season, but this Spring the braids have a more relaxed, old world charm. Hair can be french braided diagonally across the back or braided as a fish tail to keep locks together during workouts.

Messy Braid Tutorial

Designers like Rebecca Minkoff styled models with crowns of braids over the head. One could argue it looks more "Heidi" than "regal," but the tight braids keep the hair out of the face and still gives hair a girlish charm. Keep the Pippy pigtails from flopping out during a workout by providing some bobby pin reinforcement.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These models are rocking wispy updos that look like they have been inspired by a gust of wind....some larger gusts than others. This style is good for "morning after" days when there's more texture in the hair. It works great in the gym because it gives that "sexy but I'm not trying" look. Keep all the little stray pieces tucked in to prevent looking like one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pony parts have drifted from straight down the middle to the extreme side. Whether a liberal leftie or a conservative rightie, hair will look chic slicked to either side and out of the way for a workout. Just let the hair do the talking and part it on the side that lays the most natural.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lot's and lot's of slick ponys this spring. Partner up that chic side part with a slick low pontytail. Start with clean hair and opt for hairspray over gel to avoid the "wet hair" look. Tie off the pony with a pretty hairband or wrap a strand of hair around the elastic and secure a bobby pin.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria Beckham, Vera Wang, and Nicholas K were getting sporty with athletic headbands on the runway. Of course, leave it designers like Victoria and Vera to turn a cotton black headband into something chic. Both of their lines showed how timeless and classy hair looks pulled back with a simple black band.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason Wu, Ellie Saab, and Christian Dior adorned their models with glimmers of gold in their hair. Add some sparkle and finesse to your fitness outfit with a metallic hair piece or headband. Avoid heavy glitter pieces and metallic clothing to prevent looking like a shiny disco ball.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.....and don't worry too much about a post-workout shower ruining a fashion-forward workout "do". Those wet locks are still on trend for the spring, although there are no guarantees for hair compliments.....
